Mugaritz is magic...
So after yesterdays fantastic meal in Francy-land (of all places), we weren’t too sure how todays lunch was going to go.
It was only a 10 min drive from the hotel, and we took the car this time.
Mugaritz is in kinda farming land and is a lovely building surrounded by fields.
It started off on a good note, my handbag was getting its own seat - yay!
Pretty much as soon as we sat, they asked us if we wanted to go have a look in the kitchen and meet the chef - sure thing! We met the chef and his sidekick (who could speak English) explained a few things to us while we got to stare at what they were doing in the kitchen.
We were placed with two cards in front of use - one saying Submit and the other Rebel - pretty much 150 mins of delicious foods or 150 min of torture.
We started off with an envelope of flowers, which was actually quite large, and had some peanut sauce on top but I managed to get it in in one bite. This was pretty tasty.
We then had rocks.
Not really, they were potatoes inside - but they looked at felt like real rocks.
Next up was some awesome focaccia that tasted more like thin caramelised bread, with a bit of capsicum spread on top.
We then had a Mozzarella and whey emulsion (fancy) infused with smoked black tea - actually tastes much better than it sounds!
This also came with a fig cooked in clay but I had already eaten the fig before I took this photo!
This was called “fake saffron rice” but was actually zucchini seeds.
This was a crazy bread bowl with a artichoke and bone marrow filling - which they added at the table - after they dug out your bowl, of course! It was pretty cool.
We had this onion dish but they don’t tell you one of the ingredients - you have to guess. I guessed Beef and it was close - beef tongue :)
For the fish we had hake, which was ok, but I didn’t like the green bits.
We had some more fish - textures of coastal fish - which a fancy way of saying a fish concoction.
This beef came with a beef emulsion - the creamy stuff- tasted just like you were eating beef - so it was best to just chuck it on top of the actual beef. This was pretty awesome beef (on beef).
Coming up to the end, crispy pork tails with crispy leaves :) All crunchy and crispy and porky.
We opted for cheese, and surprisingly it was all quite good - nothing too strong, or too cow-pat like.
Our first dessert was a lemon sorbet, with daikon radish (the long rectangular thing). This was a confusing, yet tasty dessert. Who puts radishes with tart lemon sorbet? And how does it taste so good?
Then some chamomile tea icecream with cocoa and candied fruits. Yum.
Some little foamy icecreams with edible rocks to finish!
We had our coffees outside in the sun, enjoying our best meal so far (even better than yesterday!).
We crashed for a while, then headed out for a bit of a walk around 8.30 - only had a few bites to eat then found us an awesome little bar that had the Tour De France on the TV - so we spent the next hour or so watching them climb the Col du Tourmalet and thinking “that was us two years ago” - not the riding, just the cheering on.
