A bit underwhelmed at Akelarre...
Once again, the most awesome breakfast ever.
Ben stopped off on the way to get a cheese and ham croissant, and I had my breakfast combo again. Heaven.
Today was the complete opposite to yesterday. Yesterday was hot, today was rainy and cold, and we had a lunch at Akelarre.
We caught a taxi up the 10 mins to the otherside of the bay, up Mont Igeldo.
We were hoping this place would be pretty great, with 3 Michelin stars.
After we arrived, the weather really came in, and you couldn’t see the sea, or even the nearby trees.
We ended up going for the tasting menu, which started off on a strange note. It was actually tomato and basil paste on a strange sponge, crunchy prawn bits, and a shot of cava that tasted like medicine.
Then Xangurro with pasta - OK - I think I had a huge scale with this.
Raor shell with veal - this was OK again, but the razor shell at Paco Meralgo was better.
This was Sauteed fresh foie which was good, I always like my foie.
This was a sponge of olive, tomato and plain with beans - OK but nothing mind blowing.
Then more fish, tubot - this time both Ben and I had scales - not really what we expected at this kind of place.
Suckling pig was good, but I expected more crunchiness on the top.
And that was most of the meal - really underwhelming.
We had cheese - the blob on the right hand side was gross.
And last a dessert of cherries and edible chocolat vanilla stones - too sweet for me.
It was nice that the chef came out at the end and had a chat to us, that was probably the highlight of the meal - but the food was just OK. No where near our best so far.
We ended up feeling a bit underwhelmed. Service wasn’t great, there was a table of loud and drunken Americans at a nearby table, and the food was a bit average. We were really hoping for more.
We headed back in the taxi to our place to hide from the weather for a few hours.
Tonight we kept tapas pretty short - only a couple of places.
Hopefully tomorrow is better!
