Shannnon

More fun in Madrid - Santceloni...

Another day of walking around Madrid and not eating much in preparation for our dinner.

This time at Santceloni. This place is a bit more old school in terms of the service - lots of guys in ties, with specific things they all do. There are the two guys who move the cheese table, the special sommelier who has a big necklace around his neck (who I made friends with), the plate servers etc.

No surprise that we went for the tasting menu - what else would we do? But this time it was a surprise - basically the chef makes it up with what he has on hand today, and most of the things aren’t even on the menu. As a result I am not really sure what everything was so here goes…

Santceloni

To start off we had pre-dinner nibbles of sea snail (that’s a first for us) - and a salad of mussels.

Nibbles Mussels

Next up was a blini with some roe sparkling on top - delicious.

We then had this birds nest of

Then a potato salad in little mini hollowed out potatoes.

We then had tuna tartar which was actually pretty tasty, and went well with the foam.

We had some little pasta parcels with cheese inside.

Next up was some crayfish with crumbed bits on top - even though we are in the middle of Spain this crayfish tasted pretty awesome.

Crayfish

Then a fish and scrambled egg concoction which sounds weird but tastes good.

Fish and egg

I think this was fish with a pork scrap stew - full of flavour and somehow went with the fish.

Tastiness

Next up was the cheese table - literally. Two guys come and lift a huge table to you so you can peruse the cheese. We let the cheese dude cut us some cheese, but we weren’t able to finish it as it was huge!

Cheese cart Cheeses

Then we had a duo of desserts - a mango cube and sorbet dessert - fresh and fruity! Then a chocolaty/coffee dessert.

Mango Coffee and choc

We finished with some petite fours and chocolates.

We decided to have some wines to match our dinner, and chatted to the Sommelier. He was wearing a huge medallion around his neck, which I asked him about. It is called a Tastevin, a traditional silver cup used to determine wine maturity and taste. I thought it was pretty cool.

Overall dinner was great. Food was tasty, service was great and friendly, and we tried things we hadn’t had before (like sea snails, egg and fish, different cheeses).
